Saint Nicholas was the author of many church services, but little else about his life is known. He lived in the second half of the 13th century, and the last years of his life coincided with the reign of King Vakhtang III (1298, 1302-1308), the son of the holy king Demetre the Devoted.
St. Nicholas was one of the greatest hymnographers and spiritual figures of his time, but few of his works have been preserved. Catholicos Anton I writes that Nicholas composed numerous canons and services, including a "Canon of Supplication for Rain." St. Nicholas enriched the spiritual literature of Georgia with his translations as well. Scholars and historians believe that, as the greatest liturgist of his time, he was probably asked to translate many prayers and services from Greek to Georgian.
Among them, they believe, was the "Canon for the Blessing of Holy Water."
The famous 19th-century historian Platon Ioseliani writes that other church services belonging to the pen of St. Nicholas are included among the manuscripts of the Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos. St. Nicholas reposed peacefully in the year 1308.

We have reached the point where our herb operations and our Vodoun/Botanica activities BOTH need more room to expand, and with the Grail Art Gallery swallowing up all the great artwork that we have never had room to display at the Cat & Cauldron, now is the time to get the Witchcraft Shop into the High Street.10 Benedict Street will remain very much part of the organization, but will be run exclusively as a Botanica and Occult Consultation space. We will leave the boys to it and keep you informed of progress! Herbal supplies and ALL Witchcraft and general pagan items will come up to the Cat & Cauldron in the Market Place, which will greatly simplify our order processing as everything will again be in one place. A few of the more fantasy ranges will end up in The Magick Box - dragons for example, as we make sure there is as little as possible duplication between the shops.All Artwork is now being placed in the Gallery where it will be much better displayed. My office will probably go up there too, which will mean I can be there to open it a couple of days a week and get on with things while I am there. The most obvious visible change will be that the herb counter that has been the workhorse in Benedict Street will now take pride of place in the Cat & Cauldron, and we will begin to use it to prepare herbs and incenses, as well as candles and all other Witchcraft Supplies.The boys are keen to get decorating - so this is happening as I'm writing! Christians, Jews and Muslims often allege a moral monopoly; but the facts betray another truth. Consider, for example, the history of Jerusalem-a plot of land each tradition claims as holy.
Jerusalem has been fought over 118 times, completely obliterated at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked an additional 52 times and captured or recaptured 44 times. It has seen 20 revolts, innumerable riots and five distinct periods of violent terrorist attacks during the past century. Jerusalem has changed hands peacefully only twice in 4000 years. Those who killed for Jerusalem believed they alone possessed a God-given right to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sherif.
Consider the Christian Crusaders' own accounts of their sacking of Jerusalem in 1099 CE: "The pagans were mercifully beheaded, others plunged from towers, others tortured and burned to death in searing flames. Piles of heads lay in the streets." These pious Christians burned or disemboweled the infidels alive simply to pilfer their swallowed coins. "After a great and cruel slaughter of Saracens, of whom 10,000 fell..., we stabbed women [and] seized infants by their feet, dashing them against walls, breaking their necks." All this, for the glory of their God.
Monotheists might protest that religion has produced much worldly virtue as well. But if you believe as I do, that people are essentially good-natured, you might conclude that individuals would act virtuously despite their religion. By contrast, if you believe that people are essentially evil (for example, that even newly-born babies are steeped in Original Sin), you will likely conclude that individuals require outside assistance.
But clearly, religious dogmatism is an inappropriate prescription for morality. How about education instead? Has anyone ever heard of a bloodthirsty horde of historians or scientists who butchered innocent women and children in the name of Thucydides or Aristarchus?

THE VISUAL APPEALEveryone has a distinct learning style. This statement has been proven by academic research as well as through psychological profiling. For many of us we learn through our visual experiences first, and then become engaged more deeply through the other forms of sensorial expression. I am a visual kinesthetic learner; meaning that I learn best when visually engaged and am able to act out or move in accord with what is being taught. This style always kept me ahead of the game when I was dancing since I picked up intricate and lengthy choreography very quickly and easily as it was shown and I copied the movements with my own body.Most magickal workers are visual kinesthetic in their basic learning style. This mode of learning and processing is also the underpinning of most artistic experience. All of the arts stimulate the senses and open and awaken the neural pathways so they respond in a more dynamic way. This stimulation in turn causes a tactile response of integrating and responding to the experience through the process of doing. Add the visual component and you have the key ingredients of a solid working magickal practice. This is the energy and law of attraction that begins by learning through the action of doing and visualizing with intent the outcome that is desired to be brought into manifest form. I mentioned in my last post about the geometric images formed by the dancers of the Pilobolus Dance Theater and the impact this had on those experiencing the performances. This is the same premise that we use when employing the visual to our magickal work. Visual art evokes emotion through use of color, tone and hue; again creating specific patterns of vibratory resonance and the geometric or non-linear method of structure produces its own set of stimuli for the brain to respond or react to. This is the process of fueling desire to feed the will towards action. All of which, is set in the imaginings or visioning of what that desired outcome will be. One of my daughters is an artist. Her work is inspired by the spiritual nature of humanity. She is often lost in the work she produces as slender hand sketches, paints and adds life to what she creates. The visual image is a powerful tool in magickal work. We use statues, magickal tools, candles, amulets, altars and more to bring our intent into a place of manifestation. We empower sigils and glyphs to hold the energy they have been created to embody and we garb ourselves in the dress and style of the magick we work as form of identification. Underlying all of these actions is the universal principle of attraction and the resonation of like with like to produce a synthesized and cohesive newly created product. When you read her artist' statement below, you have a sense of what is the intent for the work to be viewed. The interesting thing about this is that this statement will vary as the artist finds new routes and methods of expression each having been formulated from the foundation of the other. MY WORK IS CENTERED ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HUMAN BODY AND HIS/HER PSYCHOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT. This is the magick of creation pouring from one vessel into the next and available to quench the thirst of all who desire its sweet nectar. SELF-INSPIRED: For this month's exercise the focus is on truly "seeing" what is around you. If you have the time and are able to spend a few hours at a Museum, that would be a great starting point. But, ANY setting will do as we are continually surrounded by the visual. Begin by setting the intent of really seeing what surrounds you. Focus on a singular object; in particular one that seems to attracts your immediate attention. Now, relax and breathe into the experience of connecting to what you are seeing. Make note of the colors, textures and shapes. What other senses are drawn into the experience. If it relates to food, the senses of smell and taste may be employed. If it is a visual performance, sound will come into play. Make mental note of all that you experience; mental, emotional and actively- from whatever you are seeing. Do this with several types of imagery over several days. As you begin to cultivate this awareness you will also begin to feel the energetic connections that differ from visual to visual. According to the legend, the Jade Emperor invited nine buddhas to ask them to become teachers for his son. Nine buddhas assembled and created the Cosmic Yantra each plane of that forms a field of a certain aspect of Power. Eight buddhas were responsible for eight planes of the Yantra. The ninth buddha was responsible for the Center. The son of the Emperor gradually entered each sector of the Yantra where he got an initiating lesson.
THE PROTECTOR REVEALED THE POWER OF BIRTH
This buddha keeps the forefathers' inheritance, their testament. He connects a person with the resource of Birth, with the relict sources of vitality and with the springs of genetic memory, which are as ancient as evolution itself. He's a Primogenitor whose continuation we are. He's a forebear who protects and blesses. Like no one else he's interested in our existence. His presence is expressed in a sense of life, in experience of birth and death, in primordial instincts. He knows exactly and prompts who's friend and who's foe, what's beneficial and what's harmful, when you have to attack and when you have to step back.
THE WARRIOR REVEALED THE POWER OF WILL
He mobilizes all the resources for the achievement of the purpose. He gathers them into a bundle. By means of Will the Warrior implements his intention and brings new lands under cultivation. This buddha is always ready to die. When it's necessary he pronounces a Mantra of Anger acting unflinchingly and relentlessly. He's a Master of the Art of War. He hones his combat skills all the time. His presence is expressed in a sense of purpose, in honest self-expression, in the unity of form and will, in a present moment. Everything he has is the way of Heart.
THE WIZARD REVEALED THE POWER OF FAITH
This sector is special. We can't take even a step without faith. Every move we make is based on faith. We know so little about ourselves and about the world but we believe. We believe in our lucky star, we believe in kindness. Faith is a basis of Magic. What does this buddha believe in? He believes in Meaning, in Essence, in God, in a magical entity of Existence. By means of his faith the Wizard tells the mountain to come up and it does. By means of his faith he transforms the reality and he creates. His presence is expressed in a sense of mysterious, secret and different things, in intuition, in the Might of forms of the supernatural force that rules everything.
THE THINKER REVEALED THE POWER OF MIND
This buddha possesses a critical gift which helps him to sift out ashes from cinders. He's capable of exscinding the needless, untying the knots, allowing for all possibilities. He's a source of intellectual assets. He teaches to analyze, to plan, to make an inventory. He's a man of Knowledge. He's Strategist and Philosopher. He's attentive to all little things, he's precise and impartial. Understanding everything, everybody, every event and their cause-and-effect connection - is a result of his evaluation. His presence is expressed in a sense of meaning, in insight, in regulating, in putting forth ideas.
THE HEALER REVEALED THE POWER OF PROPORTION
The presence of the Healer is expressed in a sense of proportion, in the deep knowledge of what to do and how to help yourself. He's a music tuner of the human body, he leads it to a tonal purity of a reference frequence. The Healer measures the efforts, balances the opposites, corrects the structure and brings together all the parts of the whole. He's responsible for body recovery, in disbalance he brings us back to the mark of Health. He also forms right attitude to the pain, teaches to accept it and to work at it. The Healer is a witchdoctor, a herbalist and a venom keeper as well.
THE STORYTELLER REVEALED THE POWER OF WORD
The word connects a subtle plane with a gross plane of the Universe. As a bearer of Meaning a word can attract a spiritual substance into the reality. The Storyteller has the gift of the gab and charisma. He's got the Mead of Poetry upon his lips. He's a guide to the Core. He opens the doors of the miraculous world of the Myth offering us an opportunity to set off for a magic journey. His presence is expressed in a sense of narrative style, in an inspirational speech, in a magic talk. His lesson is comprehension of the names of all things and events in the world. The Storyteller avoids prate. His word is tough, honest and weighty.
THE WATCHER REVEALED THE POWER OF FATE
Everything we were given - our true calling, our mission, our talent - is our Fate. It's all the staff we had with us coming into this world. This buddha is a Gardener of your life. He "tills" the Fate of every single person and of all humanity in general. He makes a selection and cultivation of the evolutionary reasonable features, he gets rid of pests and parasites, clears the debris. His presence is expressed in a sense of true calling, in a sense of responsibility, in self-observation, humility and acceptance. He's calm, attentive, hardworking and as a result he's solid. The Watcher always pays attention for omens, signs, synchronicity and clues. He warns, guards and puts out of harm's way.
THE SEEKER REVEALED THE POWER OF FREEDOM
This buddha implements free choice and makes decisions getting rid of stereotypes and prejudices. He incessantly maintains search activity seeking the best option. Freedom is also the Unknown. As people usually fear the Unknown, they also fear the freedom. The Seeker is an explorer, a hunter, a test pilot. He fearlessly takes the road and crosses the borders of the familiar yearning for changes. His presence is expressed in a sense of Way, in flexibility, in a sense of independence. His lesson is about a point of choice, that determines a further direction.
THE NINTH BUDDHA, THE CREATOR REPRESENTS THE SELF, I.E. THE POWER OF "REAL SELF".
However the learner didn't meet anyone in the Center of the cosmic Yantra where he should have got the final lesson. He had been waiting patiently for nine days and nine nights until he got totally distracted. Why does the mysterious Creator refuse to teach him? This very special moment should affirm his succession right. Does it mean that the learner hasn't met the challenge? The learner faced an essential question: Who am I? This question was stinging and sticking from inside. What am I for?
The answer came from the deep inside and it was surprising. The ninth buddha hid inside of him from the very beginning - his inner teacher, his guide. Now he was giving the guidance, the boy needed nothing but hang upon his words. All the aspects of Power were joined together in the center of Cosmic Yantra where the Creator appeared and all nine buddhas were standing around him with the palms put together above their bowing heads.

The liturgical year comes to an end with Christ the King/Reign of Christ Sunday. As we ponder what it means for Christ to be king, it is perhaps fitting that the gospel reading for the day focuses on judgment. One of the roles an ancient king had was that of judge. Solomon, we're told, was renowned for his wisdom as exemplified in the judgment rendered with the women who contested to whom a child belonged. It was said that Israel "stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him, to execute judgment" (1 Kings 3:16-28). With knowledge that monarchs were charged with being the final judges in their realms, we end this cycle of readings knowing that judgment has been a central theme of recent readings from Matthew's Gospel. Since the moment that Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem being hailed as Son of David, this has been at the heart of his message even as he faces imminent arrest. In the aftermath of Jesus' entrance into the city, he had been warning the crowds that that the timing of the Son of Man's return in glory was unknown and would come when least expected (Matthew 24:36ff).
