The term 'scrying' is general for any form of divination that involves gazing into a shiny or polished surface, such as water, a mirror, but most especially a glass sphere, in order to receive 'foresight or hidden knowledge' from the spirit world.
Scrying has been used for many thousands of years and is one of the most ancient forms of divination. It was used in Egypt, Babylon, Greece and China. Any reflective surface can be used, such as mirrors, a pool of water or black ink poured into the palm. Many modern scryers use a glass or quartz globe but it is possible to scry effectively using water placed a bowl.
Try the following method:
The scrying room should have reduced lighting with closed curtains, a shielded candle or soft lamp light.
Fill a glass bowl with water. Water is a blessed substance and has highly spiritual properties. It is a good conductor for psychic power. You can place some flower petals into the water if you choose or a few drops of olive or essential oil.
Sit with your back to the light source and look within the bowl and rest your eye focus. Take a moment to offer a prayer for guidance and wisdom. Take a few deep breaths and relax. Just stare comfortably and let your mind wander for a few minutes.
Return your thoughts to the water. Deep within the reflection you will see some movement and some images or associations will come to mind. Dwell for a moment on these images and associations and compose a story around them. Your spirit guides will inform, enlighten and guide the storyline to reveal information to you.
The most famous scryer in history was the medium, Edward Kelley, who served the eminent nobleman, Dr John Dee. Dee was a powerful, intelligent and curious Christian and became advisor to Queen Elizabeth I and heads of state in Europe. Edward Kelley made contact with archangels (such as Raphael and Uriel) and the Old Testament prophet, Enoch, for magic and sorcery that sadly proved to be spurious.

Let's face it, there are so many tarot card decks out there. With so much to choose from, it can be difficult for a beginning tarot card reader to select a deck that is right for them. After all, you want to learn how to read the tarot cards accurately. But how do you figure it all out when each tarot card deck seems to have vastly different artwork and symbolism? Some tarot card decks look like nothing more than some paint swirls and geometric designs on card paper. How do you read those tarot cards? Some tarot card decks can be stunningly beautiful. It is these beautiful, artistic decks that you want to hold and touch and look at more frequently. Unfortunately, some of these beautiful decks do nothing to unlock your psyche and open up the channels to your intuition, and you flounder and fail in your attempts to do a reading with one of these tarot decks.
I believe it is important to select a tarot card deck that feels right to you, with the emphasis on the word feels. It is important to have a tarot deck that you are comfortable with, and that the symbols resonate with you personally. Ideally, you want a tarot deck that speaks to you, a deck that speaks directly to your intuition. Having said that, I believe all newbies to the tarot should learn the symbolism of the Rider-Waite deck. This deck and its symbolism will take you far into the future of your path with the tarot, and it will serve you well. The traditional symbols on the Rider-Waite deck easily and immediately offer the tarot card reader a visual explanation of what the card represents.
Aesthetically speaking, I personally dislike the Rider-Waite deck. However, I've use the Rider-Waite deck often. Other decks may be beautiful, but some decks are just too darn difficult to fathom. The artists of some of these tarot card decks seem to have veered too far into their own personal symbolism rather than offering some of the more traditional symbols, which means that you have to rely on the accompanying book in order to read these tarot cards. In any case, choose a deck that speaks to you, a deck that you love to hold in your hands and look at, but do take the time to learn the symbolism on the Rider-Waite tarot deck.
Here are some things to look for in a deck. Do the tarot cards comfortably fit your hand? Do the colors on the tarot cards make you feel good? (If you don't like the deck, you won't want to handle it as often as you need to.) Do you like the artwork on the cards? Look at each tarot card individually and try to determine if the symbols speak to your intuition. Do the symbols have meaning for you? Are the symbols easy for you to understand and divine? And don^aEURTMt forget the most obvious: can you comfortably shuffle the deck?
Some of the more popular choices are the Rider-Waite, the Universal Waite, and the Gilded Tarot. Of these three, the most beautiful deck is the Gilded Tarot. But I must say, my personal recommendation is The Pictorial Key Tarot deck by Lo Scarabeo. This is by far the best deck currently available. If you become a tarot card collector, there are many more decks you will want to examine before you make your ultimate decision. Eventually, you will find your deck. Enjoy the path.

Most books about the Tarot are instruction manuals, teaching beginners the basics of what the cards mean. The Tarot Masters: Insights From the World's Leading Tarot Expertsis something different - and is a book that can probably be best appreciated by those who are already familiar with Tarot and know something about its history and teachers.
Publisher Hay House describes it on its website, saying: "In this beautifully illustrated book, leading experts from the world of Tarot, including Rachel Pollack, Mary K. Greer, Ciro Marchetti, and Caitlin Matthews, share their insights into the cards of the Major Arcana, and reveal the profound impact that Tarot has had on their lives."
Well, "Beautifully illustrated" might be a slight exaggeration of the pictures in the book - although it is illustrated with nice, original black and white interpretations of the Major Arcana - but the writing certainly is beautiful.
As Hay House Each goes on to say: "Each contributor shares how their Tarot journey began and what inspired them, and gives their interpretation of a Major Arcana card, and what it is about that card that they love or loathe. Their answers will help to deepen your own understanding of Tarot, and how this ancient craft can enrich your life."
Several dozen leading tarot designers, teachers and authors as well as other influential pagans and spiritual leaders have put pen to paper for this book. Each gives their own interpretation of a particular card that is personal to them and describes what got them started on the journey of the Tarot. And Tarot most certainly is a journey, both in the graphic novel-like story described in its images and in the path of personal development it inspires us to follow once we begin to study and use a deck. In fact, the book's editor, Kim Arnold, offers a new 23rd Major Arcana card with the title The Path (pictured above).

Well, Waite obviously thought the influence of qabalah was significant enough for him to change the attribution of The Fool from Shin (where Wirth had placed it) to Aleph - which then made the Magician correspond to Beth, etc. Without any other changes, this assigment of Aleph to the Fool offset each of the qabalistic attributions that Levi had assigned prior to Wirth placing The Fool (Shin) between XX (Judgement) and XXI (The World).
But Waite made further changes to Wirth's ordering of the Trumps - Waite placed Justice as Trump XI (while Wirth had placed Justice as Trump VIII)
and Strenth to Trump VIII (while Wirth had Strength placed at Trump XI).
Why would Waite have made such changes if the influence of qabalah wasn't significant enough to support it?

All forms of symbolism in Waite's deck can be considered 'an overlay'.
Alchemical influences are an overlay. Astrological influences are another.
Numerology, colors, picture content, etc. - all just more types of
"overlay". Are all the influences in Waite's symbolism overt? Just because it doesn't jump out at you and hit you over the head with a hammer doesn't mean you should completely discard the possibility that it is present.
Waite cared enough to include qabalistic influences in his Major Arcana.
It seems possible that there would also be qabalistic influences in his Minor Arcana as well - maybe those influences simply aren't as overtly presented as those in the Majors. It is even quite possible that Waite purposely chose not to make any overt representations of qabalistic influences to his Minor Arcana.
Waite wished to produce a deck that would present what he would wish it to present. Study the type of stuff that Waite had studied before he caused Pamela Colman Smith to illustrate his tarot deck. Then factor in the works Waite had published (and also those he translated) before he published his

What I'm trying to relate to you is that Waite's deck is not only part of the history of all forms of tarot, but is also a part of the tradition of occult tarot. As such, knowledge of the occult tarot tradition/history should be considered before deciding that the qabalistic influences within Waite's deck can be disregarded - in either the Major Arcana "the
Minor Arcana. The qabalistic influences are present because Waite himself was influenced by a lot of things, including (but not limited to) the Golden Dawn, which happened to instruct its members about the occult tarot (as they conceptualized it) as part if its necessary course of study.
I can agree with you that the illustrations within Waite's Minor Arcana may not immediately bring qabalistic influences to one's attention, but it still seems probable to me that the artwork of each of those cards
contains some form of qabalistic connection just the same. As an example, I pulled out Waite's 3 of Swords to see if there was some possible
qabalistic connection to the symbolism he chose for the card:
Center of card - big, giant red heart pierced by three swords. A heart pierced by up to seven swords is the symbol of the Sorrowful and
Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic tradition. (Waite was raised as a Catholic.) The four threes in the Minor Arcana represent the third Sephirah, Binah. It may not be overt, but the relationship to a qabalistic connection is there in the central symbol.

My favourite part of the Christian Nativity story has always been the bit about the star guiding the Three Magi to Bethlehem to visit the newborn child Jesus, the symbol of light returning to the world. So, on Christmas Eve, I thought I might write about the meaning of the Star card in Tarot.
In most modern Tarot decks the picture for the Star shows a woman kneeling on the bank of a pool or river, dipping one foot into it. She holds two jugs and is pouring liquid from one onto the land and from the other into the water. Above her shine the stars in the night sky - one of them is usually much brighter than the rest. In older decks, the woman is often shown gesturing at a large star above her head (you can see an example of the Star from the Bacchus Tarot in the left in the row of cards at the top).
The card is a symbol of optimism and is often interpreted as representing the a renewal of hope for the future after troubled times. In the picture the land represents the material world while the water represents the subconscious. The woman stands on both, while the pitchers represent integration of the elements.
The star itself is a small light in the darkness, and it can guide us to greater spiritual awareness as well as to emotional happiness and also material success. If we choose to follow our star, wherever it may lead us, we can be sure we will eventually find the goal of our journey even though the path is not yet completely clear and what we find at the end may not be exactly what we expect.
This is a perfect card to represent the time just after the Winter Solstice, when the nights are still long, but the days are slowly lengthening. Hope - and a new springtime - lie ahead.
