"Christian theology is full of masculine terminology. If we really think about it, the Christian Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - could be interpreted as a thoroughgoing male deity.Is Godde masculine or feminine? Even to pose the question is to realize that Godde, as a spiritual being beyond our comprehension, is neither male nor female. Or perhaps more to the point, considering that Genesis 1:27 indicates that woman and man were both created in Godde's image, Godde can be described using feminine as well as masculine terms.To be sure, the Bible uses not only masculine images to depict Godde, but feminine images as well. Consider Isaiah 66:13: "As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you" (NRSV). Throughout the Psalms, Godde is described as a mother hen protecting her children under her wing.The Holy Spirit in particular is an archetypal image that evokes the Divine Feminine. She gives birth (John 3:6), life (2 Cor. 3:6), inspiration (2 Pet. 1:21), comfort (Acts 9:31), and groans as if in childbirth (Rom. 8:23). Furthermore, she is described as fire and as a dove - both feminine images of the divine in that culture.Ben Zoma wrote in the Talmud that "the Spirit of God was brooding over the face of the waters like a dove which broods over her young but does not touch them" (Hag. 15a).There is another compelling feminine image in the Bible: That of Lady Wisdom. Early one morning around 5:00 o'clock I was sitting on the love seat in our living room having a time worship and prayer. During my prayer time I was intensely praying for God to show me his glory. Just as I got the words out of my mouth the room lit up with a bright light. My heart felt like it would explode from the force of the pressure. I could feel it beating rapidly in my throat. Fear gripped me as I sat frozen to the love seat. Never in my life have I been so afraid. It is almost indescribable.
Almost as soon as the fear gripped me I began to feel very foolish. I realized that just as I had prayed those words that a car pulled out from the road across from our house and the headlights had shown through the window and illuminated the room. As foolish as I felt it still took several minutes for my heart to get back to normal.
God spoke to me, "Do you still want to see my glory?" I answered, "I'm not sure if I am ready to see your glory. If the headlights of a car scare me that bad I can't imagine if it had really been you." I changed my prayer that morning from, "Lord, I want to see your glory." to "Lord, help me get ready to see your glory." That light, even though it came from a car, exposed the condition of my heart. I think God set me up.
What is the glory of God? Let's begin to answer that question by looking at a number of occasions when the glory of the Lord appears in scripture.
Then Moses spoke to Aaron, Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel,Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your complaints. Now it came to pass as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.(Exodus 16:9-10)
Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days... (Exodus 24:16)
Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. (Exodus 40:34-35)
Now it happened, when the congregation had gathered against Moses and Aaron, that they turned toward the tabernacle of meeting; and suddenly the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared. (Numbers 16:42)
And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord. (1 Kings 8:10-11)
Then the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub, and paused over the threshold of the temple; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the Lord's glory. (Ezekiel 10:4)
Some time back I received an e-mail from a lady asking me if I knew of a word to describe a cloudy haze she witnesses hovering over people as they worship. I replied that I wasn't sure of any word to describe it, but that it could be some manifestation of God's presence. Often people describe God's glory as a cloud. However, the cloud itself is not the glory of God. God appears in the cloud to hide man from his glory; the cloud is a protection.
The Apostle Paul wrote to his disciple Timothy concerning God. In 1 Timothy 6:16 he said,...who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. The Apostle John wrote, This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5-6) God is perfect light. Should man in his natural state look at the unveiled glory of God he would die.
When Moses asked God to show him his glory God replied, I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But He said, You cannot see my face; for no man shall see me, and live. And the Lord said, Here is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand while I pass by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen. (Exodus 33:19-23)
God explained to Moses that no one could see his face and live and offered to hide Moses as his glory passed by. God also equated his glory with his goodness. According to Strong's Concordance the Hebrew word for goodness is tuwb which means good in the widest sense. It also carries with it the idea of beauty, gladness and welfare. God also proclaimed the name of Jehovah before Moses. Jehovah is the Jewish national name for God and means self-existent and eternal.
To define the glory of God we must go further than the light. The light is the brilliance of his glory. When Moses asked to see God's glory he used the Hebrew word kabowd. Kabowd means weightiness, splendor and honor. God's glory is everything that makes up God; his authority, power, and sovereignty. Psalmists wrote that the heavens declare the glory of God and that his glory is above the heavens and earth (Psalm 19:1; 113:4; 148:13). His glory is much more than we can comprehend; the depth of his goodness exceeds our grasp.
Though God hid Moses in the cleft of the rock at Sinai and did not allow him to see his face, God did allow Moses to see his glory face to face many years after Moses had died. This took place on a mountain we call The Mount of Transfiguration. The following tells that story:
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him! And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. (Matthew 17:1-6)
The Apostle Paul wrote, For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6) In other words; In the face of Jesus Christ was the light of the knowledge of the glory of God. It was Jesus of whom Isaiah prophesied would be the great light (Isaiah 9:1-2: Matthew 4:15-16); the light Simeon prophesied would come to the Gentiles and Israel (Luke 2:32); the light John said had come into the world (John 1:4-9); and the one who said, I am the light of the world. (John 8:12; 9:5) It is Jesus (the Lamb) who will be the glory of God that illuminates the eternal habitation of God's people (Revelation 21:23).
The revelation of the glory of God was in the face of Jesus. There is no better expression of the glory of God. Jesus embodied all that is God. Paul exhorted the Colossians that in Christ was all the fullness of the Godhead in body form (Colossians 2:9). Every characteristic God revealed about himself to Moses at Sinai was true of Jesus.
The revelation of Jesus as the glory of God began at his birth. John declared, And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14) Isaiah had prophesied this many years before when he said a virgin would bear a son and his name would be called Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14) meaning with us is God.
The way Jesus lived his life and performed his ministry exemplified the attributes or glory of God. When Jesus preached to the poor and received all that came to him by faith he portrayed God's love and grace. When he healed the sick, cast out demons and raised the dead he portrayed God's mercy and compassion. When he calmed the seas, multiplied the bread and turned water into wine he portrayed God's power. When he taught the people, cleared the temple and outwitted the religious leaders he portrayed God's authority.
Before Jesus ascended to the Father he left the church a mission to continue his Father's work; a mission for the continuation of the presentation of God's glory (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-18).
The church is desperate for the glory of the Lord to once again fill the temple. When his glory comes, his manifest presence, people change. Once we have experienced the wonder of his glory we will be ruined to everything we have known as church. In the presence of his majesty man's agendas disintegrate. Only in a place where self has died can God take up habitation. Let us clear our schedules and make a place for the God of glory to call home.

(for example, going to a friend's house for the glory of God but end up fighting off a strong urge to be excited more for the friend than glorifying God)Now I feel like I have to stay isolated all day and only do things that are obligatory for me to live and are remote occasions of sin such as eat, sleep, work, and going to church!Even worse I think willfully avoiding sin due to fear instead of love of God is a sin too so I'm afraid to even go out because there will be a strong possibility I will have to avoid sin do to servile fear, thus causing me to sin!People will say these are imperfections, but I have been told that imperfections are sins too! So I just assume intentional imperfections=sinHow do I overcome this? Am I overreacting?I understand that I have been told to talk to a spiritual director but I don't have one right now and it is too late to conatact a priest! :(

History of Witchcraft (part 2)
From Mesopotamia lets move over to Persia.
Unlike the Mesopotamians, and Egyptians, who believed that all
was done with either the favor or lack ther of the Gods, the
Chaldean star religion taught that luck and disaster were no
chance events, but were controlled from the heavenly bodies
(planets/stars) which send good and bad according to mathematical
laws. It was their belief that man was incapable of fighting the
will of the planet divinities. Though, the more this system
evolved, the more the wise men read ethical values into man's
fate. The will of the stars was not completely separate from
man's behaviors. The stars were important, but not omnipotent in
deciding man's fate. It was believed that the star Sirius would
carry messages to the higher gods and he returned to announce
their will.
Around the 7th Century B.C. Zoroaster, the Median prophet was
preaching the doctrines that evil could be avoided and defeated.
He brought about the principles of the good and evil spirits.
Below, we will look at the beliefs and influences of this man's
life which created the religion named after him.
The first of the belief structure had to do with Ormazd (Ahura-
Mazda) king of light, and his twin brother Ahriman (Anro-Mainyu)
prince of darkness.
Zoroaster brought about the belief in the "holy war" (that
between good and evil.) In this faith, the archangels (the
spirits of Divine Wisdom, Righteousness, Dominion, Devotion,
Totality, and Salvation) and the demons (the spirits of Anarchy,
Apostasy, Presumption, Destruction, Decay, and Fury) were
constantly at battle with one another. The archangels were
controled by Ormazd and the demons by Ahriman.
This religion had it's belief that in the end, Ormazd and his
demons would prevail, but until then, Ormazd would keep the world
safe.
It is interesting that the last of the demons (the demon of Fury)
holds such a hard and fast thought that it was incorporated into
the Hebrew and Christian belief structure. The last archdemon's
name is Aeshma Daeva also know to the Hebrews as Ashmadai and to
Christians as Asmodeus.
Asmodeus was the "chief of the fourth hierarchy of evil demons",
called "the avengers of wickedness, crimes and misdeeds." He
appears with three heads, a bull's, human, and a ram. He has
goose feet, and a snake's tail. To appear more frightening, he
also exhales fire and rides upon a dragon of hell.
It is said that Asmodeus is not to be feared. When you say to
him: "In truth thou art Asmodeus," he will give you a wonderful
ring. He will teach you geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and
mechanics. When questioned, he answers truthfully.
The other demons tempt people away from the true worship of
Mazda. They are Paromaiti - Arrogance, Mitox - The Falsely
Spoken Word, Zaurvan - Decrepitude, Akatasa - Meddlesomeness,
Vereno - Lust.
Much of the current day Christian beliefs were taken from this
man's religion. (That of good and evil forces, the redemption,
the "savior" factor, etc.)

Many schools of thought teach us that it is the difficult things in life that serve as an impetus to greater growth and wholeness. Jesus said that temptations (stumbling blocks) must come as a necessary experience in life. Buddha expressed this sentiment when he said that it is our enemy who teaches us the most valuable lessons. According to the psychological concept of individuation, it is only by overcoming adversity that we become whole and fully functioning individuals capable of realizing our true potential. Similarly, the Edgar Cayce readings teach us that it is the difficult things in life that present us with opportunities to further our spiritual development and bring us closer to God. The readings tell us that a soul enters the earth plane to learn lessons necessary for its spiritual development. It is only after we have applied and mastered a lesson that we are allowed to continue on to the next step. God is patient and merciful. We are given opportunity after opportunity to become the creative beings we were meant to be. The readings also tell us that very few experiences happen by chance. The catalyst for individuation is something that is destructive or life threatening to the individual. The catalyst for spiritual awakening is often adversity of some kind. The readings call these experiences stumbling blocks and frequently admonish us to take the stumbling blocks we encounter in our lives and turn them into stepping-stones toward greater spiritual growth and development. If he had made that choice, however, he would have separated himself from God and fostered a separation-consciousness. Instead, Job chose to manifest spiritual attributes thereby reaffirming a unity-consciousness between himself and his Creator. Because of the misfortunes he experienced, Job knew both good and evil, and through free will, made the choice to manifest good. By returning good for evil, Job experienced a high level of spiritual growth. When we experience those difficult things in life, we need to remember that it is our response to those difficulties that truly defines us. If we respond from a divine perspective, we make a choice to rise above surface appearances and search for the lesson each experience brings. Philip Clayton suggests in Transforming Christian Theology for Church and Society that there are seven core theological questions that Christians should seek to wrestle with, using Scripture, Tradition, Experience, and Reason as the foundation for this attempt. I offered my response in an earlier posting. One of my church members, an elder in the congregation, and one who has a gifting and calling in teaching at the church, wrote out his own. He did this as part of our Theology 101 class. I asked him if I could share it, and he agreed. 1. God
I believe that God is the "hands-on" creator of the universe, and of all of that I can conceive. I believe that while God is ineffable, God has chosen to live in a loving relationship with humanity. To make this possible God has engaged in self-disclosure through nature, scripture, prophets, and through the incarnation in Jesus of Nazareth. I do not believe that God is unchangeable nor do I believe it is helpful to think of God as perfect in the ways that are traditionally taught. While God is transcendent, God is also very present. God is not immune to change, including change in the form of growth, pain, and grief. God celebrates with, and grieves with, humanity. I believe also that God answers prayers.
2. Jesus the Christ
I believe that Jesus of Nazareth was and is the incarnation of God on earth. Humans can only know God through means of God's acts of self-disclosure, including through the very personal disclosure that was made in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. In Jesus, God refocused our attention on the important details of God's prior self-disclosures. Moreover, in the life and death of Jesus, God directly challenged human violence by allowing his own horrendous execution, and by taking on the wounds of the world. In so doing he modeled the most appropriate response to violence: forgiveness. Finally, in the resurrection of Jesus the Christ God delivered a message of hope to the world.
3. Holy Spirit
I believe the Holy Spirit is the manifestation of God in our lives. Through the Holy Spirit God communicates the divine will to humanity. The form of this communion is the grace filled indwelling of the Spirit within each human.
4. Humanity
I believe that God created the whole of humanity and each human being as a relational partner. Humans, having been made in the image and likeness of God, are children of God, not as adopted children but are natural and genetic children of the Divine. God relates to his children with loving kindness, and the compassion only a parent can have for a child from her very own womb. Humans are granted the grace of relationship with each other and with the Divine. And while God has configured humans to yearn for a relationship with God, God invites, but does not compel, humans to respond to God's extravagant love with faith-filled trust. Sin generally is the failure to love God or God's creation. Sin manifests itself most distinctly in acts of violence. I do not believe that God directly punishes sin, but that sin ultimately carries its own adverse consequences.
5. Salvation
I believe that salvation is offered in the here and now to each and every human being through the immediate availability of kingdom living. Jesus said the Kingdom is here, in the person of himself, and he invites us to follow him in accepting the yoke of the kingdom. I believe that loving kindness, compassion, and forgiveness are the hallmarks of kingdom living, and to the extent we undertake these manifestations of the kingdom, we bring about the kingdom in our world.
6. Church
I believe that the purposes of the Church include the provision of a mechanism for communal worship of God, as well as the preservation and communication from generation to generation of the self-disclosures of God. I believe that the church, when it operates as it is intended, is a force for reconciliation between God and humans, and between humans and humans. The church consists of the universal priesthood of all believers, and is led by those whom the believers, led by the Holy Spirit, acknowledge as empowered by God to the role of shepherd. While God has envisioned the unity of all believers, God communes with each believer in a language, and in a culturally meaningful context, meaning that there is no one single denomination which is favored by God, but each denomination and each religious tradition, to the extent that it seeks to accomplish its divinely inspired purposes of compassion and reconciliation, reflects the genuine will and work of God in the world.
7. Last Things
I believe that we all leave this world bearing the wounds of our earthy relationships, but that God has prepared a place of healing for us to enter into. Beyond that, I believe that "Last Things" are in the hands of God, and efforts to discern the last things are a distraction from the work which God has for us in the here and now. I believe that focus on last things is misguided, egotistical, and unhealthy. I believe that we are called to trust in the Lord that in the end God's will for each of God's children will be accomplished.
