Tim Burton is a Goth with Daddy issues - it's not controversial to say that anymore, right?
It's been pretty well established that Burtons unique visual style and method of story telling has been heavily influenced by the Goth scene of the 80's, which took a skewed look at the western world and decided it didn't want to follow in the footsteps of its parents.
So those of you out there who quite like Burton's style whilst also being fans of comics...where do you start? This article hopes to help you with that. From homicidal killers to poetry in motion, here's a recommendation of where to look.
SANDMAN
"Let's start with the the most obvious choice. Neil Gaiman's celebrated story of a group of living concepts, headed by Morpheus, a being who is so 80's he manages to wear just a black dressing gown and still" pull it off, has been talked up so much its not even worth mentioning too much. Many more than I have phrased it's appeal better than I ever will, but suffice to say, it mixes baroque concepts with prose that drips the kind of humour Burton is famous for. Mind you, there's a far better story out there...
LUCIFER
"People say that Sandman is a great story and to an extend it's true. But where Sandman is a comic that and a great story to boot". Spinning out of the events of Sandman, Lucifer stars the Morningstar himself, who having grown weary of the role God assigned him abandons hell and strikes out for himself to try and make a better world than his father even could.

EMILY THE STRANGE
Though I've remarked in the past that she's more an icon than an actual relatable human being, Emily has still inspired millions around the world with her DIY spirit and determination that girls can do it better than boys. She's starred in a few comic series, most recently Emily and the Strangers, but really her effect has been teaching a generation of girls that its ok to shy away from what is considered 'normal' and just be themselves. Which is the Goth spirit personified really.
JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC
Jhonen Vasquez's first breakout hit, the comic series tells the story of a young man named Johnny C., as he explores the psychological and possibly supernatural forces which compel him to commit a string of murders. Heavy on blood whilst giving everything a slightly humorous twist, JTHM is dark, twisted and distinctly counter-culture, despising everything that modern day life is.
It's also a very funny comic from start to finish which actually challenges the apathy that counter culture thinking can bring. All whilst involving a villainous stuffed bear.
A must see for those who like the spikier, more biting Burton.
LENORE
Channelling the whimsy of everyday life/death, Lenore stars a character who is dead, who spends most of her days mucking around with her friends and scaring the living. Whereas the prior entries all are extremes to one end or another, Lenore imagines a slightly softer and irrelevant side to the goth lifestyle without sacrificing any of what makes it appealing to those attracted to the subculture.
Lenore has attracted a dedicated following during her exitance in part due to her creator Roman Dirge's desire to keep the project creator owned and underground. Worth checking out if the you know someone who needs a gentle introduction to Burton's work.

The court's ruling, expected next June, could be one of the most significant church-state decisions in 30 years, and could affect the nature of such invocations in municipal meetings nationwide.It is entirely possible that the court might provide legal cover for those who insist on using government to promote their religion (nearly always Christianity). "Didn't I warn you of more SCARY pics from me, haha so here they come! Anyways guys I had another weekend full of fun. Sat morning we all went out for YUM CHA (my fav Chinese outing). The word 'Yum Cha' means to drink tea. The traditional custom originated in Southern China, where people would go to a 'Tea House' to drink tea. The custom has changed over time to become a ritual where friends meet at a restaurant for Yum Cha, usually in the morning/lunchtime and eat a variety of yummy Chinese dishes with green tea. At Yum Cha, dim-sim ladies present dishes on the trolleys. Customers then select their preferred dishes from the trolleys. Hope you've had Yum Cha too. "My cousins' sweet kids came along too and they couldn't keep away from me as usual...'Keshi Aunty can we do this?', 'Keshi Aunty can we do that?', 'Keshi Aunty can we go shopping?', 'Keshi Aunty can we watch Futurama together?' etc etc etc. "And there was no stopping on chatting continuously, sometimes without even breathing, sitting on my lap and pulling my cheeks etc etc etc hehehe. "So what did we do on Sat night? You're gonna kill me - yep we went Dancing again at the "DOCKS" :) - a popular nightclub at the Darling Harbour. Well this time there was a special reason why we went there. One of our friends (Kyle) is leaving to Hong Kong this weekend on a long-term work contract (and to earn big bucks). EKTA and ANAND, I was thinking how lucky Kyle is, cos he's going to be where you guys are. So a group of close friends and most of my cousins, decided to go out for drinks and dancing - as a farewell party for him. "We had MEGA FUN alright. The music was sizzling and the crowd was even more sizzling! Ladies, there were some real hot guys dancing real good - I was watching them with so much admiration ahemmm. And guys, there were some real hot ladies that you'd pass out watching em dancing lol! Just go to that site and check out the pics - you will know what I'm saying. Anyways, we danced, strolled in the harbour a bit and then came home around 2:30am. I was so hungry when I came home so I had chicken and bread at 3am and I hit the bed straight away - now how unhealthy is that? Anyways woke up at 11am the next day - felt like an out-of-control teenager after a long time lol! I never did that sort of thing when I was a teenager (my dad would have shot me and then made a tombstone reading 'SHE DIED WANTING TO GO TO A NIGHCLUB'). So what makes me a witch? Can I just say I'm a witch and be one? Do I need to live by the rule of three? How do I know I'm a witch? How do I come to terms with others "becoming" a witch?These are the odd questions I find myself contemplating this morning. I've recently learned that someone who was extremely nasty and negative, someone who in the past contacted me with hate and anger has "become" a witch.My first thought is, well if it harms none, then let it go. Accept the new face for what it is displaying and go forward. The skeptical part of me however thinks otherwise. The skeptical part of me thinks that maybe this is just another part of the "Woo let me shock everyone" by this time picking up Wicca and calling myself a witch. Am I being too judgmental? It's not like I own Wicca. It's not like I can tell anyone if they are or are not truly a witch. To go further, it's not even like I really want to discuss it with them either. To me, in order to "Be A Witch", you need to be one with nature. You need to have your body and mind grounded. You need to be able to look at the world understand that negativity is out there, identify it and react accordingly. You cannot look at the world with seek and destroy glasses on, you have to pull out those live and let live glasses and trust that all that we see is part of the natural circle of life. Even the bad stuff. To be a witch you need to understand that you can focus your energies and send them out to others. You need to send that energy out in a positive way. You need to respect the rule of three and do what you can to honor the Reede. Most of all, you need to have a giving understanding accepting and loving heart.More than a having an altar, more than having books and candles, the mind is the most important tool for a witch.
